Lead and cadmium are foodborne contaminants that threaten human and animal health. It is well known that lead and cadmium produce hepatotoxicity; however, defense mechanisms against the co-toxic effects of lead and cadmium remain unknown. We investigated the mechanism of autophagy (defense mechanism) against the co-induced toxicity of lead and cadmium in rat hepatocytes (BRL-3A cells). Cultured rat liver BRL-3A cell lines were co-cultured with 10, 20, 40 µM lead and 2.5, 5, 10 µM cadmium alone and in co-culture for 12 h and exposed to 5 mM 3-Methyladenine (3-MA), 10 µM rapamycin (Rapa), and 50 nM Beclin1 siRNA to induce cellular autophagy. Our results show that treatment of BRL-3A cells with lead and cadmium significantly decreased the cell viability, increased intracellular reactive oxygen species levels, decreased mitochondrial membrane potential levels, and induced apoptosis, which are factors leading to liver injury, and cell damage was exacerbated by co-exposure to lead-cadmium. In addition, the results showed that lead and cadmium co-treatment induced autophagy. We further observed that the suppression of autophagy with 3-MA or Beclin1 siRNA promoted lead-cadmium-induced apoptosis, whereas enhancement of autophagy with Rapa suppressed lead-cadmium-induced apoptosis. These results demonstrated that co-treatment with lead and cadmium induces apoptosis in BRL-3A cells. Interestingly, the activation of autophagy provides cells with a self-protective mechanism against induced apoptosis. This study provides insights into the role of autophagy in lead-cadmium-induced apoptosis, which may be beneficial for the treatment of lead-cadmium-induced liver injury.

Background: Scutellaria baicalensis, the dry root of scutellaria baicalensis georgi, is a traditional Chinese medicine with long. In clinic, scutellaria baicalensis is commonly used in prescription for the treatment of depression. Additionally, numerous pre-clinical studies have shown that Scutellaria baicalensis and its active constituents are effective for depression. In this study, we aims to systematically review the roles of scutellaria baicalensis in depression and summarize the possible mechanism. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to analyze the existing studies on the effects of scutellaria baicalensis on depression in animal models. Briefly, we searched electronic databases including Pubmed and Embase for preclinical trial studies from inception to September 2023. The items in each study were evaluated by two independent reviewers, and meta-analyses were performed on scutellaria baicalensis-induced behavioral changes in the study. Finally, random effects model is used to collect data. Results: A total of 49 studies were identified, and 13 studies were included in the final analysis. They all reported the different antidepressant effects of scutellaria baicalensis and the underlying biological mechanisms. Among the included 13 studies, the results of eight articles SPT[SMD = -2.80, 95%CI(-4.03, -1.57), p < 0.01], the results of the nine articles OFT[SMD = -2.38, 95%CI(-3.53, -1.23), p < 0.01], and the results of two articles NSFT[SMD = -2.98, 95%CI(-3.94, -2.02), p < 0.01] were significantly different from the control group. The risk of bias was moderate in all studies, however, there was a significant heterogeneity among studies. Conclusion: These results preliminarily suggest that scutellaria baicalensis can alleviate depressive behaviors and modulate underlying mechanisms, which is expected to be a promising antidepressant.

Acute generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP) is a serious illness. Despite various treatment methods, there is still lack of effective treatment plans for refractory cases with multiple comorbidities. This case report presents a 67-year-old woman with acute GPP, stage 4 chronic kidney disease (CKD), type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, in whom skin symptom disappearance and kidney function improvement were observed after the use of oral tacrolimus as the sole therapy. This is the first report on the application of tacrolimus in the treatment of acute GPP, especially refractory acute GPP. The successful treatment indicates that there are shared immune pathways between acute GPP and CKD, and the pathways can be interdicted by tacrolimus. Further studies are needed to optimize the therapy to maximize efficacy and minimize toxicity.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacological studies have found Ginkgo biloba leaves have the effect of inhibiting neoplasms, it is clinically used in treating various neoplasms. However, the mechanism of Ginkgo biloba leaves in treating non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains unclear. METHODS: The active components and corresponding targets of Ginkgo biloba leaves were obtained from the traditional Chinese medicine systems pharmacology database and analysis platform (TCMSP) database, and the targets of NSCLC were obtained from the GeneCards, OMIM, TTD, and DrugBank databases. The common targets of NSCLC and Ginkgo biloba leaves were obtained from VENNY 2.1.0. The STRING database was utilized to construct protein-protein intersections, by using the Cytoscape 3.7.1 software, the protein-protein intersection was optimized and the drug-disease network diagram was constructed. The DAVID database was utilized to perform GO and KEGG analysis. Finally, The Autodock Vina software was used to perform molecular docking of core components and targets. RESULTS: The key components of Ginkgo biloba leaves in treating NSCLC include quercetin, luteolin, and kaempferol, which may act on Tp53, AKT1, and TNF. Bioinformatic annotation analysis results suggest that Ginkgo biloba leaves may implicated in PI3K-AKT and MAPK signaling pathways. The molecular docking results show the firm affinity between key ingredients and targets. CONCLUSION: The potential mechanism of Ginkgo biloba leaves in treating NSCLC has been discussed in this study, which provides a theoretical basis for the clinical treatment of NSCLC and further experimental validation.

Rodent damage poses a significant threat to crops, human life, and health. Compared to chemical rodent control, such as placing poisonous baits, it is more economical and environmentally friendly to use physical methods, such as building a rodent-proof wall. This study introduces a method of physically controlling harmful rodents and four methods of calculating the effect of rodents control. To understand the controlling effect of the rodent-proof wall, an investigation was conducted on the Dongting Lake beach and corresponding farmland in the embankment in April and July 2012. Our findings illustrated that the density of the reed vole Microtus fortis in the farmland with rodent-proof walls was 0.52%, significantly lower than that in the farmland without rodent-proof walls (1.76%) after artificial trapping and drug extermination (χ2 = 3.900, P = 0.048). The density of M. fortis that had migrated into the farmland in dikes with a rodent-proof wall decreased by 98.53%, significantly higher than the decrease of density in dikes without a rodent-proof wall (86.61%) (χ2 = 11.060, P = 0.01). The results demonstrated the effectiveness of rodent-proof wall control. Therefore, building a rodent-proof wall should be advocated and vigorously promoted to prevent the migration of rodents into the Dongting Lake area and similar environments, as they cause harm.

OBJECTIVES: Imipenem-relebactam (IMR), a novel ß-lactam/ß-lactamase inhibitor combination, is recommended for infections caused by difficult-to-treat Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This study aimed to investigate the evolution trajectory of IMR resistance under the selection of levofloxacin in P. aeruginosa. METHODS: Antimicrobial susceptibility testing, complete genome sequencing and gene manipulation experiments were performed. Quantitative reverse transcription PCR for specific genes and porin levels were detected. Evolution trajectory was simulated in vitro by induction assay. RESULTS: P. aeruginosa HS347 and HS355 were isolated from abdominal drainage of two neighbouring patients (S and Z) undergoing surgery of colon carcinoma in Shanghai, China, with the latter patient having received levofloxacin. They were closely related ST16 strains, and both carried blaKPC-2 plasmids highly similar to those of P. aeruginosa endemic clones from Zhejiang province, where patient Z had received enteroscopy before this admission. Acquisition of resistance was observed for both IMR and fluoroquinolones in HS355, likely prompted by treatment with levofloxacin. The T274I substitution in MexS (putative oxidoreductase), upregulated efflux pump operon mexEF-oprN and decreased production of porin OprD leading to cross-resistance to fluoroquinolones and IMR, which was also verified by in vitro mutant selection under levofloxacin selection. CONCLUSIONS: The emergence of a rare blaKPC-2-plasmid-bearing ST16 clone implies the horizonal spread and inter-regional dissemination of a high-risk plasmid-clone combination, representing a public health challenge. Levofloxacin exposure can select for mexS inactivating mutation, which in turn leads to IMR resistance phenotype, implicating the role of an unrelated, widely used antimicrobial agent in insidiously triggering the development of cross resistance to a latest ß-lactam/ß-lactamase inhibitor combination.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The rhizome of Kaempferia galanga L., a medicinal and edible Plant, was widely distributed in many Asian and African counties. It has been traditionally used to treat gastroenteritis, hypertension, rheumatism and asthma. However, there is a lack of modern pharmacology studies regarding its anti-gastric ulcer activity. AIM OF THE STUDY: The objective of this study is to investigate the protective effects of an extract from K. galanga L. rhizome (Kge) and its active components kaempferol and luteolin on ethanol-induced gastric ulcer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The kge was prepared by ultrasonic-assisted extraction, and the contents of kaempferol and luteolin were determined by HPLC. The mice were randomly divided into seven groups: blank control (0.5 % CMC-Na; 0.1 mL/10 g), untreatment (0.5 % CMC-Na; 0.1 mL/10 g), Kge (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg), kaempferol (100 mg/kg) and luteolin (100 mg/kg) groups. The mice were treated intragastrically once daily for 7 days. At 1 h post the last administration, the mice in all groups except the blank control group were intragastrically administrated with anhydrous alcohol (0.1 mL/10 g) once to induce gastric ulcer. Then, fasting was continued for 1 h, followed by sample collection for evaluation by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction assay. RESULTS: The contents of kaempferol and luteolin in Kge were determined as 3713 µg/g and 2510 µg/g, respectively. Alcohol induced severely damages with edema, inflammatory cell infiltration and bleeding, and the ulcer index was 17.63 %. After pre-treatment with Kge (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg), kaempferol and luteolin, the pathological lesions were obviously alleviated and ulcer indices were reduced to 13.42 %, 11.65 %, 6.54 %, 3.58 % and 3.85 %, respectively. In untreated group, the contents of Ca2+, myeloperoxidase, malondialdehyde, NO, cyclic adenosine monophosphate and histamine were significantly increased, while the contents of hexosamine, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and prostaglandin E2 were significantly decreased; the transcriptional levels of IL-1α, IL-1ß, IL-6, calcitonin gene related peptide, substance P, M3 muscarinic acetylcholine receptor, histamine H2 receptor, cholecystokinin 2 receptor and H+/K+ ATPase were significantly increased when compared with the blank control group. After pre-treatment, all of these changes were alleviated, even returned to normal levels. Kge exhibited anti-gastric ulcer activity and the high dose of Kge (400 mg/kg) exhibited comparable activity to that of kaempferol and luteolin. CONCLUSION: The study showed that K. galanga L., kaempferol, and luteolin have protective effects against ethanol-induced gastric ulcers. This is achieved by regulating the mucosal barrier, oxidative stress, and gastric regulatory mediators, as well as inhibiting the TRPV1 signaling pathway and gastric acid secretion, ultimately reducing the gastric ulcer index.

The disruptor of telomeric silencing 1-like (DOT1L), a specific histone methyltransferase that catalyzed methylation of histone H3 on lysine 79, was associated with the pathogenesis of many diseases, but its role in peritoneal fibrosis remained unexplored. Here, we examined the role of DOT1L in the expression and activation of protein tyrosine kinases and development of peritoneal fibrosis. We found that a significant rise of DOT1L expression in the fibrotic peritoneum tissues from long-term PD patients and mice. Inhibition of DOT1L significantly attenuated the profibrotic phenotypic differentiation of mesothelial cells and macrophages, and alleviated peritoneal fibrosis. Mechanistically, RNA sequencing and proteomic analysis indicated that DOT1L was mainly involved in the processes of protein tyrosine kinase binding and extracellular matrix structural constituent in the peritoneum. Chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) showed that intranuclear DOT1L guided H3K79me2 to upregulate EGFR in mesothelial cells and JAK3 in macrophages. Immunoprecipitation and immunofluorescence showed that extranuclear DOT1L could interact with EGFR and JAK3, and maintain the activated signaling pathways. In summary, DOT1L promoted the expression and activation of tyrosine kinases (EGFR in mesothelial cells and JAK3 in macrophages), promoting cells differentiate into profibrotic phenotype and thus peritoneal fibrosis. We provide the novel mechanism of dialysis-related peritoneal fibrosis (PF) and the new targets for clinical drug development. DOT1L inhibitor had the PF therapeutic potential.

BACKGROUND: Kiwi root is a Chinese herb clinically used in the treatment of lung neoplasm; however, the multi-target mechanism of kiwi root in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains to be elucidated. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the molecular mechanisms of kiwi root in the treatment of NSCLC through network pharmacology and molecular docking techniques. METHODS: The active components and targets of kiwi root were obtained from the TCMSP database, and NSCLC-related targets were obtained from the GeneCards, OMIM, and DrugBank databases. The intersection targets of NSCLC and kiwi root were obtained from VENNY 2.1.0. Then, the common targets were imported into the STRING database, and by using the Cytoscape 3.7.1 software, drug-disease network diagrams were created. Afterwards, the DAVID database was utilized to perform bioinformatic annotation. Finally, molecular docking of key components and key targets was performed by Autodock Tools. RESULTS: A total of 4083 NSCLC-related disease genes were collected from the GeneCards, OMIM,and DrugBank databases, and 177 non-duplicated drug targets were acquired from the TCMSP database. A total of 138 intersection target genes were obtained, in which TP53, AKT1, and TNF were the key targets. CONCLUSION: Through network pharmacology techniques, the mechanism of kiwi root in the treatment of NSCLC has been uncovered and provides a theoretical basis for the clinical treatment of NSCLC with kiwi root, which requires further experimental validation.

BACKGROUND: CAMK1 has been shown to be involved in human disease progression via regulating mitochondrial dynamics. However, whether CAMK1 mediates mitochondrial dynamics to regulate diabetic nephropathy (DN) process remains unclear. METHODS: Mice were injected with streptozotocin (STZ) to mimic diabetic mice models in vivo, and mice with proximal tubule-specific knockout of CAMK1 (CAMK1-KO) were generated. HK-2 cells were treated with high-glucose (HG) to mimic DN cell model in vitro. Histopathological analysis was performed to confirm kidney injury in mice. ROS production and apoptosis were assessed by DHE staining and TUNEL staining. Mitochondria morphology was observed and analyzed by electron microscopy. Mitochondrial membrane potential was detected by JC-1 staining, and cell proliferation was measured by EdU assay. The mRNA and protein expression were examined by qRT-PCR, western blot and immunostaining. RNA interaction was confirmed by RIP assay and dual-luciferase reporter assay. The mRNA stability was tested by actinomycin D treatment, and m6A level was examined by MeRIP assay. RESULTS: CAMK1 was reduced in DN patients and STZ-induced diabetic mice. Conditional deletion of CAMK1 aggravated kidney injury and promoted mitochondrial fission in diabetic mice. CAMK1 overexpression inhibited mitochondrial fission to alleviate HG-induced HK-2 cell apoptosis. IGF2BP3 promoted the stability of CAMK1 mRNA by m6A modification. IGF2BP3 inhibited mitochondrial fission to repress cell apoptosis in vitro and kidney injury in vivo by increasing CAMK1 expression. CONCLUSION: IGF2BP3-mediated CAMK1 mRNA stability alleviated DN progression by inhibiting mitochondria fission.

Sodium dual-ion batteries (Na-DIBs) have attracted increasing attention due to their high operative voltages and low-cost raw materials. However, the practical applications of Na-DIBs are still hindered by the issues, such as low capacity and poor Coulombic efficiency, which is highly correlated with the compatibility between electrode and electrolyte but rarely investigated. Herein, fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) is introduced into the electrolyte to regulate cation/anion solvation structure and the stability of cathode/anode-electrolyte interphase of Na-DIBs. The FEC modulates the environment of PF6 - solvation sheath and facilitates the interaction of PF6 - on graphite. In addition, the NaF-rich interphase caused by the preferential decomposition of FEC effectively inhibits side reactions and pulverization of anodes with the electrolyte. Consequently, Sb||graphite full cells in FEC-containing electrolyte achieve an improved capacity, cycling stability and Coulombic efficiency. This work elucidates the underlying mechanism of bifunctional FEC and provides an alternative strategy of building high-performance dual ion batteries.

OBJECTIVE: Analyze the research state and development trend of photodynamic therapy for dermatology using visual knowledge graphs derived from the Web of Science Core Collection database. METHODS: The Web of Science Core Collection database was utilized as the search data source for the bibliometric analysis, and the associated articles published between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2022, were obtained using the search terms "photodynamic therapy" and "dermatology". CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and additional tools were utilized for bibliometric analysis, and visual knowledge graphs were created. RESULTS: Eight hundred and thirty two articles were retrieved in total, and 747 were included following de-duplication and transformation. The country with the greatest number of publications is the United States; the primary research institution was University of Copenhagen; and the references with the highest centrality were primarily concerned with the selection of photosensitizers; High frequency keywords primarily comprised 5 aminolevulinic acid and basal cell carcinoma; and the clustering graph revealed that all keywords fell into 11 categories. CONCLUSION: In numerous areas of dermatology, photodynamic treatment is commonly employed. Current research focuses on nonneoplastic skin diseases and the choice of photosensitizers. Nonetheless, its specific mechanism and other applications merit further investigation.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The role of GGC repeat expansions within NOTCH2NLC in Parkinson's disease (PD) and the substantia nigra (SN) dopaminergic neuron remains unclear. Here, we profile the NOTCH2NLC GGC repeat expansions in a large cohort of patients with PD. We also investigate the role of GGC repeat expansions within NOTCH2NLC in the dopaminergic neurodegeneration of SN. METHODS: A total of 2,522 patients diagnosed with PD and 1,085 health controls were analyzed for the repeat expansions of NOTCH2NLC by repeat-primed PCR and GC-rich PCR assay. Furthermore, the effects of GGC repeat expansions in NOTCH2NLC on dopaminergic neurons were investigated by using recombinant adeno-associated virus (AAV)-mediated overexpression of NOTCH2NLC with 98 GGC repeats in the SN of mice by stereotactic injection. RESULTS: Four PD pedigrees (4/333, 1.2%) and three sporadic PD patients (3/2189, 0.14%) were identified with pathogenic GGC repeat expansions (larger than 60 GGC repeats) in the NOTCH2NLC gene, while eight PD patients and one healthy control were identified with intermediate GGC repeat expansions ranging from 41 to 60 repeats. No significant difference was observed in the distribution of intermediate NOTCH2NLC GGC repeat expansions between PD cases and controls (Fisher's exact test p-value = 0.29). Skin biopsy showed P62-positive intranuclear NOTCH2NLC-polyGlycine (polyG) inclusions in the skin nerve fibers of patient. Expanded GGC repeats in NOTCH2NLC produced widespread intranuclear and perinuclear polyG inclusions, which led to a severe loss of dopaminergic neurons in the SN. Consistently, polyG inclusions were presented in the SN of EIIa-NOTCH2NLC-(GGC)98 transgenic mice and also led to dopaminergic neuron loss in the SN. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, our findings provide strong evidence that GGC repeat expansions within NOTCH2NLC contribute to the pathogenesis of PD and cause degeneration of nigral dopaminergic neurons.

RESUMO

Mycobacterium chelonae is a non-tuberculous mycobacteria, which can cause skin infectious granuloma through cosmetic injection. This disease's treatment requires a combination of sensitive antibiotics and a lengthy treatment cycle. Photodynamic therapy is still effective for patients who are unwilling to take antibiotics orally. In this case, we successfully used fire needle combined with photodynamic therapy to treat skin infectious granulomatosis caused by Mycobacterium chelonei, and achieved satisfactory results. We used fire needle to pretreat cysts and nodules, which improved the diffusion and absorption of locally applied photosensitizers and enhanced the efficacy of photodynamic therapy. However, additional clinical research is necessary to determine the efficacy and safety of fire needle combined with photodynamic therapy for cutaneous infectious granulomatosis.

The recognition of surgical triplets plays a critical role in the practical application of surgical videos. It involves the sub-tasks of recognizing instruments, verbs, and targets, while establishing precise associations between them. Existing methods face two significant challenges in triplet recognition: 1) the imbalanced class distribution of surgical triplets may lead to spurious task association learning, and 2) the feature extractors cannot reconcile local and global context modeling. To overcome these challenges, this paper presents a novel multi-teacher knowledge distillation framework for multi-task triplet learning, known as MT4MTL-KD. MT4MTL-KD leverages teacher models trained on less imbalanced sub-tasks to assist multi-task student learning for triplet recognition. Moreover, we adopt different categories of backbones for the teacher and student models, facilitating the integration of local and global context modeling. To further align the semantic knowledge between the triplet task and its sub-tasks, we propose a novel feature attention module (FAM). This module utilizes attention mechanisms to assign multi-task features to specific sub-tasks. We evaluate the performance of MT4MTL-KD on both the 5-fold cross-validation and the CholecTriplet challenge splits of the CholecT45 dataset. The experimental results consistently demonstrate the superiority of our framework over state-of-the-art methods, achieving significant improvements of up to 6.4% on the cross-validation split.

OBJECTIVE: The prognostic significance of isolated tumor cells (≤0.2 mm) in sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) of endometrial cancer patients is still unclear. Our aim was to assess the prognostic value of isolated tumor cells in patients with low risk endometrial cancer who underwent SLN biopsy and did not receive adjuvant therapy. Outcomes were compared with node negative patients. METHODS: Patients with SLNs-isolated tumor cells between 2013 and 2019 were identified from 15 centers worldwide, while SLN negative patients were identified from Mayo Clinic, Rochester, between 2013 and 2018. Only low risk patients (stage IA, endometrioid histology, grade 1 or 2) who did not receive any adjuvant therapy were included. Primary outcomes were recurrence free, non-vaginal recurrence free, and overall survival, evaluated with Kaplan-Meier methods. RESULTS: 494 patients (42 isolated tumor cells and 452 node negative) were included. There were 21 (4.3%) recurrences (5 SLNs-isolated tumor cells, 16 node negative); recurrence was vaginal in six patients (1 isolated tumor cells, 5 node negative), and non-vaginal in 15 (4 isolated tumor cells, 11 node negative). Median follow-up among those without recurrence was 2.3 years (interquartile range (IQR) 1.1-3.0) and 2.6 years (IQR 0.6-4.2) in the SLN-isolated tumor cell and node negative patients, respectively. The presence of SLNs-isolated tumor cells, lymphovascular space invasion, and International Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology (FIGO) grade 2 were significant risk factors for recurrence on univariate analysis. SLN-isolated tumor cell patients had worse recurrence free survival (p<0.01) and non-vaginal recurrence free survival (p<0.01) compared with node negative patients. Similar results were observed in the subgroup of patients without lymphovascular space invasion (n=480). There was no difference in overall survival between the two cohorts in the full sample and the subset excluding patients with lymphovascular space invasion. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with SLNs-isolated tumor cells and low risk profile, without adjuvant therapy, had a significantly worse recurrence free survival compared with node negative patients with similar risk factors, after adjusting for grade and excluding patients with lymphovascular space invasion. However, the presence of SLNs-isolated tumor cells was not associated with worse overall survival.

White tea, known for its high polyphenol content, boasts impressive antioxidant properties, but its practical applications remain promising. In this study, we successfully developed a liquid polyphenolic preparation (wtofLPP) using white tea and osmanthus flowers, characterized by its rich antioxidant content and favorable rheological properties. This formulation offers a strong foundation for the creation and utilization of innovative antioxidant-rich food products. Notably, wtofLPP significantly enhanced the activity of certain antioxidant enzymes in both KM mice and their offspring, leading to a reduction in malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, prolonged swimming endurance, and a marked increase in levels of active antioxidant compounds. Furthermore, our study highlights that fatigue stress can impact offspring mice, suggesting that oxidative damage in parents may influence their offspring, potentially affecting their genetic function.

Chemical modification of sodium alginate (SA) polymer chains can increase its functional group species. Sodium periodate (SP) was usually used to oxidize the hydroxyl groups on the chain of SA to aldehyde groups, the preparation of oxidized sodium alginate (OSA) using SP is not only complicated, also limits the variety of functional groups on the chain of OSA. By contrast, we have developed an innovative strategy for OSA, in which ammonium persulfate (APS) was used to oxidize SA, providing a clear elucidation of the oxidizing process and mechanism. OSA/PAM hydrogels were synthesized using OSA, the hydrogels possess excellent adhesion properties to various non-metallic and metallic substrates. Tensile and compression tests show that the cross-linked OSA/PAM hydrogels have superior mechanical properties. We exploit OSA/PAM hydrogels as soil adhesive and water-retaining agents for wheat growth. OSA/PAM hydrogels significantly improve the survival time of wheat grown in brown loam soil under a water-shortage environment, and slow down the wilting of wheat in a water-shortage environment and prolong the survival time of wheat in sandy soils. Our trials should make hydrogels important for wheat cultivation in brown loam soils and the development of desert areas.

Skin evolves essential appendages with adaptive patterns that synergistically insulate the body from environmental insults. How similar appendages in different animals generate diversely-sized appendages remain elusive. Here we used hedgehog spine follicles and mouse hair follicles as models to investigate how similar follicles form in different sizes postnatally. Histology and immunostaining show that the spine follicles have a significantly greater size than the hair follicles. By RNA-sequencing analysis, we found that ATP synthases are highly expressed in hedgehog skin compared to mouse skin. Inhibition of ATP synthase resulted in smaller spine follicle formation during regeneration. We also identified that the mitochondrial gene COX2 functions upstream of ATP synthase that influences energy metabolism and cell proliferation to control the size of the spine follicles. Our study identified molecules that function differently in forming diversely-sized skin appendages across different animals, allowing them to adapt to the living environment and benefit from self-protection.
